Industry vs academia – part-time PhD experiences

I work as a data scientist and do a part-time PhD. It is hard, but the industry problems give me great research questions. Anyone else combining both? How do you handle publication restrictions from your employer?

I moved the other way, from industry to academia. Industry experience made my research much more practical.

Same situation in battery R&D. We agree on publishable parts in advance – the methods are usually fine, the process parameters are not.
