Teaching my first full course as a postdoc – how do you plan the semester?

Next semester I take over a 15-week Introduction to Neuroscience course for second-year students: one lecture and one lab group per week. So far I have only taught single guest lectures. How do you plan a whole semester? Do you write all slides before the term starts, or week by week? And how much time per teaching hour do you realistically budget for preparation in the first year?

Start from the learning outcomes in the syllabus and plan backwards: what should students be able to do in week 15, and which assessments show it? The slides come last. In my first year I needed about three hours of preparation for every hour in class.

Planning backwards from the assessments is a good point – I had it the other way round.

Have the first four weeks fully ready before the term, then stay two weeks ahead. Weeks 8–10 always get busy with grant deadlines, so keep those sessions simple.

Ask the previous lecturer for their materials and the exam from last year. You do not have to use them, but they show what students already expect.
